Phil Cello - Tennis Director



Cello International Tennis Academy (CITA), directed by Norcal Tennis Hall of Fame Phil Cello has partnered with the City of Woodland to organise the city's tennis program. Phil was inducted into the Norcal Coaching Hall of Fame in 2013, was a past USTA Norcal President and has been honored with the USTA Norcal Service to Tennis Lifetime Achievement Award in 1988. He has over 40 years of experience coaching, running tennis centres and academies.


Phil currently runs an elite junior academy out of Solano College in Fairfield. He has trained thousands or players of all levels including ATP and WTA professionals with one US Open title holder! Phil is also the current USA National boys and girls 12's and 14's team coach of the Nike Junior Tour International Masters.



Tommy Purcell - Head Pro


After four years of varsity tennis in high school, Tommy went on to play for Solano Community College in 2016. He was team captain and the #1 singles and # 1 doubles player, and his doubles team advanced to the state championships in Ojai, California. Tommy is graduating Spring 2019 with a degree in Psychology from UC Davis.


Tommy has also competed in several tournaments throughout California, capturing a variety of titles. He received rankings in Northern California as #1 for men’s 4.0 singles, #2 for men’s 4.5 singles and #1 in 4.5 mixed doubles. In 2018, he was named NorCal player of the year and won the NorCal Grand Prix Championship in the 4.5 mixed doubles division. Tommy currently holds an NTRP computer rating of 5.0.


He was the head coach for St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School in Vallejo, a hitting partner for the UC Davis Women’s Tennis Team, a volunteer coach for the Solano Community College team, and a teaching pro at In-Shape Rancho Solano in Fairfield. He also worked under NorCal Hall of Fame coach, Phil Cello. Tommy has been a hitting partner for two top junior tennis players who were ultimately ranked #1 and #5 in the Nation for Boy’s 16s.


Tommy is patient and personable, and he loves to see his students improve their game, compete, and have fun. He would also like to see the tennis community of Woodland grow, and help players develop their personal best.

Sunny Mallinson - Assistant Pro


Sunny loves the sport of tennis and is a very enthusiastic tennis coach. He is great at teaching technique and likes to keep his classes high energy and fun.

Sunny enjoys teaching tennis to players of all ages and skill levels. He holds numerous adult and junior groups throughout the week and is also available for private instruction.

He was the Woodland High School Boy's Team Tennis Coach and a member of the Woodland Tennis Club. He is the current coach of many High School tennis team players and has coached players from High School to College level. He is an active  on the men's singles ladder and is passionate about growing the Woodland tennis program.

Sunny also is the assistant director to may USTA Open tournaments and continues his coaching education through USTA tennis coaching courses.


Thank you so much for all that you bring to the community. I feel so lucky that I'm able to take affordable tennis lessons in such a supportive and encouraging environment. I also really love the free tennis clinic on Saturdays! The mix of people that come out to have some fun and get some exercise is really quite special
